The right tree in the right place, planted correctly, can thrive for generations. Here are general principles — not a substitute for advice tailored to your yard.

General good practices

  • Choose a species suited to your space, soil, and climate
  • Plant at the proper depth — don’t bury the root flare
  • Give roots room; loosen surrounding soil
  • Mulch properly (avoid piling mulch against the trunk)
  • Water consistently while the tree establishes
